The Basic Issue
Republicans at the national level want to open up Florida coastal waters to oil drilling. Some want to do it fairly close to the coast, others want it far out. Most Floridians, including the governor and many Florida Republicans, are opposed to the plan. Environmental groups are obviously opposed because of the potential damage to ocean wildlife. There is also potential harm to Florida's coastlines and thus related industries such as tourism.
