This is our regular feature where every day I do a quick post with the top posts/stories that I think people should read from the previous day.
1. meowmissy’s diary – 8 Reasons to Support the Florida Netroots: “Not happy with the state of Florida right now? Neither are the Florida Netroots – a network of online activists and bloggers who are working on building up the Democratic Party all across the state. Think of it as our 67 county strategy. We believe Florida will shift Democratic, but in order to do so its going to need a little push. We’re willing to give it a shove, but we need your help. Here’s 8 reasons to support the Florida Netroots….”
2. Pensacola Beach Blog – Justice Laughs in Florida: “Federal investigators have been looking into boot camps and wilderness programs for troubled youths across the country. They found, as the New York Times summarizes, ‘thousands of allegations of abuse and neglect at residential treatment programs over the last 17 years.’”
3. the 13th juror – A rare victory for a homeless man in an unfriendly city: “Noe Donnat was sleeping on a concrete slab along the Bradenton waterfront when a police officer with a flashlight woke him up. He was arrested — on two consecutive nights — for violating the city’s ban on overnight outdoor lodging. But Donnat will not be prosecuted because police did not offer to drive him to a shelter, as the Bradenton ordinance requires.”
4. Miami-Dade Dems – No more free ride for South Florida Republicans in Congress: “We’ve been demonstrating in the streets against them — the three Republican members of Congress from Miami-Dade County. The Democrats up in Washington must have heard us: The Democratic Party is starting to run radio ads against the three for their support of President Bush’s veto of the SCHIP bill on children’s health insurance.”
5. The Seminole Democrat – Is Seminole Finally Turning?: “Scott Maxwell’s 10/14 column in case you missed it: ‘ Seminole County’s power Republicans can’t be too impressed with the results of the primary in the special election for the 34th District House seat last week.’…Yes, and that change is Democrat Stephen Bacallao.”
6. Ybor City Stogie – Florida Subpoenas Allstate Allstate Corp: “The largest publicly traded U.S. insurer, was subpoenaed on Tuesday by Florida regulators in an ongoing probe into possible industry collusion to thwart state efforts to slash homeowner insurance rates. Calling the industry ‘tenacious’ and ‘greedy,’ Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican, said the investigation would shed light on the failure of Allstate and others to provide meaningful rate relief to Florida customers despite legislation earlier this year to lower rates.
7. Blast Off! – Too much bad language on TV? Fuck that shit: “The Los Angeles Times’ Martin Miller is clutching his pearls a wee bit hard with his latest column, wherein he bemoans the persistent creep of profanity on network television. Now, I’m not saying that the news should be full of doom and gloom and Iraq and Drunky McStagger, but as with the IKEA hubbub here in south Florida, I do think there are more important things to worry about than a few curse words on television.”
8. Florida Netroots – Blogging: 10 Years Old and Growing Up: “I discovered an interesting article in the Gainesville Sun entitled Blogging: 10 years old and growing up… ‘Her blog is a perfect example of someone who’s using a blog to do, in my mind, traditional journalism for a town that would have no coverage otherwise.’”
9. Pensito Review – Stop the Junk Mail Already: “Staying in the same vein as Trish’s post yesterday that encouraged readers to dump the catalogs they don’t want to receive to keep them out of the waste stream, here are some resources to help you reduce the amount of junk mail you receive….”
