12 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a quick post with the top posts/stories that I think people should read from the previous day. The basic list of possible sources is open to Florida newspapers, political web sites and progressive blogs.

1. Pensito Review: Ryan Skipper’s Death Inspires New Awareness of Hate Crimes and Another Man Killed for Being Gay; Murderer Says He Was Serving God.

2. Florida Netroots – Action Item: Tell Legislature to Get the Job Done Right This Time: “When the Florida Legislature convenes the special session scheduled to begin September 18, it will cost taxpayers $40,000 a day. To date, legislative leadership is insisting they will focus solely on making essential budget reductions, despite calls from all sides that they take up two urgent issues they failed to address during the regular session. 1. No-Fault Auto Insurance and PIP Coverage…2. KidCare…’”

3. Tallahassee Democrat Editor’s Blog – Fla. media need to take a look at ourselves: “What struck me most was looking around the room at the media. If the group that came to dinner is any indication, we still have much work to do to diversify the media.”

4. Incertus – More on No-Fault: “Let me begin by saying that I’ve become really proud of the Sun-Sentinel’s coverage of a couple of issues over the last year or two. They were the first, to my knowledge, to start saying what many suspected about the real estate market down here, namely that it was unsustainable and was softening, and they did so over the howling objections of the real estate industry, which has a lot of clout down here. And they’ve done the same with the no-fault insurance story, front-paging stories not only about the expiration of the law, but also about the effects on drivers should it expire.”

5. Broward’s Blog – Broward School Board opposes referendum to cut property taxes: “Broward School Board members have taken an official position on the upcoming state constitutional amendment to cut property taxes. They oppose it — strongly.”

6. Blast Off! – Elián 2.0 continues: “Back in March, Blast Off! told you about a custody battle that involved a father in Cuba, a mother in the U.S. who was ruled unfit to care for the child, and a wealthy foster family who wants to keep the child. The struggle is reminiscent of the Elián González episode in 2000 (albeit without the gunplay … so far), and it rages on…”

7. Florida Kossacks – Lee Nelson Running For Hillsborough County Super of Elections: “Democrat Lee Nelson will official announce his candidacy for Supervisor of Elections tomorrow.”

8. The latest on hurricanes: Why Now – Two Years On, Why Now – Tropical Update, Ybor City Stogie – Nationwide Is Not On Your Side, and Pensito Review – Why You Should Care About New Orleans.

9. Republican/Conservative Crime Watch: Broward’s Blog – My Email Exchange With Mayor Naugle, Blast Off – Today’s Daily Schadenfreude: Jim Naugle, Pushing Rope – Jim Naugle Voted Off Tourism Development Council, Pensacola Beach Blog – Playing Footsie as Usual, Blast Off – Florida GOP Police Blotter: The Orlando murder-suicide plot thickens, Pam’s House Blend – Open letter to Mayor Naugle of Ft. Lauderdale, Robin ‘Roblimo’ Miller’s Personal Web Site – Official statement: “I have never had sex with Senator Larry Craig!”, and The Buzz – Rubio, rearranging the deck chairs.

10. The latest about the presidential primary: The Buzz – Kucinich: Florida should hold caucus, The Buzz – Terrible way to pick a president?, The Buzz – Democrats sue over DNC primary stance, March on Politics – Nelson Stays Out Front On Dem Primary, Broward’s Blog – Florida Republicans to Lose 1/2 Delegates, Naked Politics – What in the world is Howard Dean thinking?, Pushing Rope – Jon Ausman vs. Florida Democratic Party, Naked Politics – Poll: Dem voters displeased with DNC’s vote rules, think it hurts Hillary, Aikane Leo – Smackdown of Florida Democrats is no solution, March on Politics – Hurdle For State Dems: 1981 Case Upheld Parties’ Rights On Convention Delegates, Naked Politics – Florida reps won’t budge on Jan. 29, Boston.com – Why Wyoming Moved, and AP – Michigan lawmakers OK Jan. 15 primary.
