16(+) to Read

Man, you people were busy yesterday. I think this is the biggest non-weekend edition of the “Stories To Read” series yet. Keep up the good work!

1. Change in Tallahassee – Some Florida election supervisors do not want error free Democratic elections: “Pat Hollarn of Okaloosa County said activists need to ‘get a life’ and noted that Rather ‘lost his job’ over his ‘false reporting’ concerning President George W. Bush’s military record. Lee County’s Sharon Harrington sees the ‘media’ is just trying to, again, ‘undermine the democrat process.’”

2. Florida Kossacks – Leaving Money on the Table and Kids Uninsured: “Florida ranks 43rd in the country when it comes to children’s health-insurance coverage, said Dr. Edward Zissman, chief executive officer of Altamonte Pediatric Associates.”

3. Incertus – There’s a better way to handle this: “But the second story is what inspired this blog post. It’s titled ‘Things insurers don’t want you to know,’ but a more accurate title might be ‘You’re going to get fucked, so here’s what to expect.’”

4. Praxis – Bright Futures: Florida’s Most Popular Welfare Program: “Let me restate that to make it a bit more clear: Bright Futures is welfare for the adult children of rich and middle class Floridians.”

5. Florida Netroots – Better Know Chris Chiari – Chat Transcript: “Chris Chiari stopped by to chat with us and we discussed things such as the upcoming special session, education, property insurance, and election reform.”

6. Change in Tallahassee – Dan Rather Reports on Touchscreen Voting Machines: The whole one-hour program available now at Voter Action or at HD TV: “In my opinion, this is THE most important report to date on e-voting.”

7. Smashed Frog – Tom Feeney Blames Illegals: “The illegals made me do it is Feeney’s latest excuse for his “NO” on SCHIP, the State’s Children’s Health Insurance Program.”

8. Incertus – Health Insurance Policies: “The Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Palm Beach Community College’s Board of Trustees split the vote as to whether or not to offer benefits to domestic partners of employees. The vote was split 2-2, with a vacancy on the board. This effectively is a decision of ‘no.’”

9. The Penile State – What (the f**K) happened in Sarasota County?: “On November 7, 2006, there was an electoral disaster in Sarasota County, Florida. Almost 18,000 people, about one in seven of the people who voted electronically, left the polls without recording a vote in the congressional race, the hottest race on the ballot.”

10. South of the Suwannee – Bad Actor: “Among the 50 states, only Mississippi and South Carolina rank lower than Florida on average ACT college entrance test scores.”

11. Blast Off! – I don’t practice Santeria: “What do you do when religious freedom and animal cruelty intersect? South Florida is facing that dilemma head on, mixed in with a healthy dose of good old American xenophobia.”

12. Tampa’s Back Door Ways – IF you WANT — recall the C’s and save your wetlands: “I noticed Vox talking about recalling the Hillsborough County Commissioners so I did some surfiing to see what was available for education.”

13. Blast Off! – Alaska congressman ♥s Florida money, part deux: “This week, the plot has thickened considerably. Apparently Rep. Young changed the language of the bill that Congress passed before it went to the White House for the president’s signature. You see, Congress passed the earmark to widen I-75 in Lee and Collier counties (including Fort Myers and Naples, respectively). But the alteration directed the earmark straight to the Coconut Road project of Young’s supporter, Daniel J. Aronoff.”

14. Reidblog – An outrage in Louisiana: “I hadn’t been following the Jena 6 case, but after reading this, I will be. The case involves six Black high school students on trial for their lives, charged with attempted murder for a fight that broke out after white students hung nooses from a tree at the 85% white high school where the students attended, this after the Black students decided to sit under the normally ‘white students only’ tree.”

15. the 13th juror – Homeless witnesses to crime must remain in jail, judge says: “Three homeless people who witnessed a fatal fight must remain in jail as the case moves toward trial, a judge in Oregon has ruled.”

16. The Buzz – Cappelli Arrested: “Angelo Cappelli, the prominent and once promising local Republican who lost a campaign against Democrat Bill Heller for state House District 52, last year, was arrested by St. Pete police today. Police charged him with first degree grand theft and perjury.”

The latest on Bob Allen:
Blast Off! – More fun with Blowin’ Bob Allen, Grassroots Brevard – Allen compares Rubio to Castro, still won’t resign, Grassroots Brevard – Bob Allen Loses Committee Assignments, March on Politics – Rubio Says Allen Can’t “Effectively Serve,” Pensito Review – Republican Florida Lawmaker Bob “Blow Job” Allen Being Squeezed Out by GOP, Smashed Frog – Bob Allen Grovels, and Talk To Me – Bob Allen derailed.

The latest on Hurricane Dean:
Bark Bark Woof Woof – Now It’s Hurricane Dean, Pensacola Beach Blog – Dean Now a Hurricane, Pensacola Beach Blog – Dean To Be ‘Major Hurricane’ Monday, and Why Now? – Are We Having Fun Yet?

The latest out-of-state Florida posts:
MyDD – How Much is Florida in Play for the Dems in 2008?, Pam’s House Blend – A Blender’s letter to Bob Allen, and Pam’s House Blend – The gay-bashing fundie caravan heads to Florida.

All of the sites in our Candidate Watch Network were updated yesterday.
