Even taking out everything that was linked to in my absence, the Yearly Kos stuff and the Bob Allen stuff, we have a whole lot to read today.
Blast Off! – Today’s sign of the apocalypse: Mayor Naugle will guest host a radio show: “Man, they’ll let anyone host a radio show, won’t they?”
Blast Off! – So much for Crist’s fiscal responsibility: “The list of Floridians who have unclaimed property and money being held by the state includes Gov. Charlie Crist and quite a few other prominent names.”
Blast Off! – Bill Nelson takes on the Interior Department: “Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) called for the dismissal of deputy assistant secretary of the Interior Todd Willens, who in what we can only hope was a fit of temporary insanity recommended that the Everglades be removed from a list of endangered United Nations World Heritage sites.”
Bloggy Bayou – Media Bias: “So I’ve just seen a great local example of media bias.”
Broward’s Blog – Klein, Florida Delegation Secure Over $2 Billion for Everglades and Beach Restoration: “When I came to Congress, I promised the people of South Florida that I would fight to restore and protect the Everglades, and restore our beaches. And after almost seven years of Congressional inaction to tackle Florida’s Everglades restoration, we in the 110th Congress have come through, and delivered.”
Build Florida’s DECs – Precinct Captains Are The Key: “Precinct captains who have been well trained and know their neighbors well alter the outcomes of elections and make polls seem inaccurate.”
Build Florida’s DECs – Never Forget Why: “When you’re building any organization, much less a DEC, you will undoubtedly run into frustration and stress. If not, you’re probably not changing anything.”
Flablog – Super homestead super bad: “I am surprised to find myself nodding my head in agreement with the critique of the proposed super-homestead amendment published by Florida TaxWatch (PDF). After all it’s written by a conservative economist and Bush adviser.”
Florida Kossacks – Bill Nelson Pinellas Town Hall: “Bill Nelson started off his August Congressional “vacation” by holding a Town Hall meeting in Pinellas County today. Nelson answered questions for one hour from the over 150 in attendance. One remarkable thing about this event? Nobody asked about Iraq.”
Grassroots Brevard – Brevard Democrats Are Making a Difference: “The Brevard County Young Democrats were chartered early this summer, and the organization has quickly blossomed in membership. Brevard Young Democrats attended the Jefferson-Jackson dinner and the FYD convention in Ft. Lauderdale in June.”
Incertus – A Blogging Union?: “It’s in the earliest stages right now, but the gist seems to be getting bloggers together to form a guild or union in order to collectively bargain for health insurance, and one would assume, better ad rates, since that’s how bloggers make money (the few who actually do, that is).”
Incertus – I Like Publix: “But I love Publix. Because they are employee-owned, very charitable, and now they are giving prescription drugs away for free.”
Pensito Review – Homeland Security Won’t Let Inspectors Say Which Bridges are Dangerous: “But people in all the counties that line the banks of the St. Johns River, a broad, northern-flowing body of water, take bridge travel as a part of daily life. So it’s a little unsettling to know that some of our hundreds of bridges don’t pass muster. It’s even worse not to know which ones.”
Pushing Rope – Feed Me Florida: “I noted that the economic report would bad news for Florida’s budget. Charlie Crist will receive the report on Wednesday. The forecast is Florida having the worst budget shortfall since the 9-11 attacks.”
Pushing Rope – The McKay Tax Plan: “Former Senate President John McKay had a great plan to make Florida’s tax system fairer and do a better job funding the budget.”
Pushing Rope – Netroots For Dummies: “Garcia makes the mistake of thinking Ron Paul’s Myspace friends are netroots. They are not. The Republican Party, and it’s current presidential candidates, have yet to provide anything resembling on organization. Gene Smith is also known as Gatordem. He has worked on Democratic campaigns in the Tampa area for years. Boy wonder Ray Seaman is highly active in the Florida Democratic Party. These are people that hardly can be accused of rarely voting. Garcia and Jim Johnson have no idea what the netroots is about because they aren’t apart of it. Progressive bloggers don’t give a shit about Myspace polls. It is about making the media cover issues, raising awareness and money for candidates.”
Pusing Rope – Time To Bid Gary Siplin Goodbye: “It is past time for the Florida Democratic Party to ask Gary Siplin to resign from the Florida Senate. He already has one felony against him. Now that is good indication he used his position to threaten Brenda Averill’s job.”
Susan S’s diary – My confrontation today with Sen. Bill Nelson on FISA: “It was a very frustrating, but rewarding experience. I have long been disappointed in Bill Nelson. Today I got the chance to tell him how I felt.”
The Spencerian – New-ish Media Versus Old-ish Media — Can’t We All Just Get Along?: “A lot was made at the recent YearlyKos event in Chicago just a day or so ago about the meaning of new media and the relevance of old media, or MSM.”
The Spencerian – The Long Slog Towards Meaningful Election Reform: “However, I still remain mystified that, nearly seven years after the Election 2000 disaster, no one has delivered meaningful election reform.”
Talk To Me – A Slow Burn: “On the return trip home from vacation several years ago, my travel route was diverted to avoid a massive wildfire burning west of I-95. ‘That’s what happens in Florida during a drought,’ I mentioned to my kids as we sat bumper to bumper for the next couple of hours, ash ominously flittering about the car when the wind turned our way. ‘Without the afternoon rain, the state becomes one giant tinderbox.’”
Talk To Me – Phone Buzzards: “Did you know the correctional phone market is worth well over $1 billion a year, according to the Florida Prisoners Legal Aid Organization?”
Taking Names – Crist Q&A – The full transcript: “What’s with you and that “America’s Hottest Mom” contestant? [She’s a former reality-show contestant to whom Crist has been linked, though an aide later whispers in my ear that Crist himself has never claimed they were an item.] You guys still together? No.”
the 13th juror – Death takes homeless woman who stood up for her rights: “A homeless woman suing the city of Fresno over the destruction of homeless people’s belongings during raids on their camps has died, just days after the lawsuit gained class-action status.”
the 13th juror – Life in prison for being homeless?: “A sex offender who was unable to register his address with state officials because he was homeless is facing life in prison for violating a new registry law that politicians in Georgia have hailed as the nation’s toughest.”
the 13th juror – Homeless man says Bradenton cops beat him up and dumped him in a ditch: “Jose del Angel, a 32-year-old day laborer, flagged down a Manatee County Sheriff’s deputy after the beating and recounted the story in an affidavit. As a result, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has opened a criminal investigation.”
the 13th juror – Homeless can bring class-action suit for destruction of their property: “Homeless people who had their personal property destroyed by Fresno officials can join a class-action lawsuit against the city, a federal judge has ruled.”
And one from out of state – Pam’s House Blend: Naugle: is he looking to keep the straight men out of the potty?
