Florida’s Black, Latino and Native American students, taken together, have less than 60 percent of the opportunity to attend the state’s best-supported, best-performing schools than the state’s White, non-Latino students. A student of any race or ethnicity eligible for free or reduced price lunch has less than 60 percent of the opportunity to learn of the average White, non-Latino student.

“Regulators on Thursday shut down BankUnited FSB, a struggling Florida thrift whose closure is expected to cost the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. $4.9 billion….BankUnited FSB is the 34th federally insured institution to be closed this year, and the biggest. The FDIC on Thursday took control of the bank, which called itself Florida’s largest banking institution with about $13 billion in assets as of May 2.”

The American Clean Energy And Security Act of 2009 is out of committee and will be debated on the House floor in June. In a recent press release Rep. Castor touts a measure she added to the bill. “I successfully added a measure to the bill that is designed to expand the use of solar power in Florida and other states.”

Art Argenio is dropping out of an anticipated brutal GOP primary battle against Joe Negron to replace retiring state Sen. Ken Pruitt, according to a source close to the campaigns.

Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a state contracting bill Wednesday evening, claiming the bill would inject “unnecessary uncertainty” over the process of hiring private vendors through state agencies.

But a former adviser to Crist is suing the state, claiming the Department of Corrections broke the Sunshine Law by mishandling a contract to provide mental health services to inmates.

Gov. Charlie Crist signed the 2009-2010 $66.5 billion state budget today but lawmakers could be forced to come back to cut it as they did earlier this year.

A grand jury has just indicted developer Jay Odom on a felony charge of official misconduct for his role in the $6 million airport building that Rep. Ray Sansom secured funding for in 2007. The jury also added a perjury charge for Sansom, who testified in April that he was unaware the airport building would be used by Odom.

Mike Huckabee will endorse Marco Rubio over Charlie Crist.

Jeb Bush Jr., younger son of the former governor, has endorsed Marco Rubio in the Florida U.S. Senate race, choosing Rubio over Gov. Charlie Crist.

A Florida campaign law requiring nonpartisan groups to register as elections groups unconstitutionally limits political free speech, a federal judge has ruled. Good news.

Yomin Postelnik is running for Ellyn Bogdanoff’s seat, while she runs for state Senate.

Carl Domino is running for state Senate in District 25.

Jeff Atwater is running for CFO.

Jim Lewis is running for AG.

Gov. Charlie Crist’s office just released an executive order scheduling the primary and general elections to replace the Senate seat of longtime lawmaker Ken Pruitt, who gave notice on the final day of session that he will step down early. The primary will be June 30. The general election will be August 4, Pruitt’s last day. The frontrunner is former Rep. Joe Negron, a fellow Republican who’s already got lobbyists and Republican lawmakers in his cheerleading circle.

Bronson seems to be out of the governor’s race.
