10 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a post with the top 10 blog posts that I think people should read from the previous day. Posts are included here and ranked based on a combination of originality, focus on Florida, length (longer, more thorough analysis is better), quality of writing and impact of the story.

1. Incertus (Amy) – It’s the Economy, Stupid: “The conservatives talk a good game about family values, but all of the actual policies that actually create the conditions that keep families happy and healthy are social-democratic ones.”

2. Eye on Miami (gimleteye) – Miami’s Hispanic vote: not dyed blue yet: “In Florida on November 4th, Barack Obama made historic inroads with the Hispanic vote. In southeastern Congressional districts, including Miami, three Cuban American Republican incumbents, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario and Lincoln Diaz-Balart faced credible Democratic challengers; Annette Taddeo, Joe Garcia, and Raul Martinez.”

3. Change in Tallahassee – Anti-Choice Proponents Biggest Losers Of Election 2008: “At almost every level, last week’s election was a stinging defeat for the anti-choice movement, Many conservatives, contended that Obama will be “the most radical pro-choice president” in U.S. history.”

4. Incertus (Brian) – Priorities, People: “Think about that for a second. How many major sporting events are sponsored by major corporations that are in financial trouble right now thanks to the current meltdown? NASCAR’s very existence could be threatened if GM and Chrysler go down, and pretty much every stadium and arena has sold its naming rights to a major company. Remember what Minute Maid Park in Houston used to be named?”

5. Wildwood Preservation Society – Save Florida’s Freshwater Turtles: “Turtle experts and conservationists are concerned about the status of Florida’s freshwater turtles, in light of recent reports of unusually large freshwater turtle harvests and a growing demand for wild-caught turtles as food and pets. Many of these turtles are slow-growing, slow to reach sexual maturity, and relatively easy to harvest. As a result, large harvests of adult turtles could have devastating, long-lasting population effects.”

6. madfloridian – Southern Baptists convene in Florida, celebrate their hateful agenda.: “I have never made a secret that I was raised in the Southern Baptist Church. My parents were what are called pillars of the church. They are gone now, but they would be distressed at the way the church has gone.”

7. Pushing Rope – Draft Alex Sink: “Democrats want CFO Alex Sink to run for Governor in 2010.”

8. Miami & Beyond – The beam in their eye: “Republicans lamenting “disrespect for the president” as a deplorable tradition liberals started with Bush. That’s absolutely right and it’s a lesson we should all take to heart. We all remember them being very respectful to Clinton, never calling him names or mocking him, right?”

9. madfloridian – Lawsuits still pending over Florida primary…one against DNC, one now filed against state party: “You would think it would be over, but it’s not. There have been several lawsuits againt the DNC over the early primary which the Florida Democrats supported against national party rules.”

10. Incertus (Brian) – Don’t forget about us: “In its editorial today arguing on the side of the Summum in the latest Ten Commandments case, the NY Times editorial board sums it up about how you’d expect.”
