10 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a post with the top 10 blog posts that I think people should read from the previous day. Posts are included here and ranked based on a combination of originality, focus on Florida, length (longer, more thorough analysis is better), quality of writing and impact of the story.

1. Incertus (Brian) – Same Sex Marriage As the Next Civil Rights Battle: “Let me begin by acknowledging the reality that there are more civil rights issues than just same-sex marriage being wrestled with right now, and that these are being fought simultaneously, with varying degrees of success. What I mean is that this is the big one, the one that’s taking up most of the space in the public consciousness, and that we’ve been dealing with for the last 6 years in particular and that we will continue to fight in the future.”

2. the 13th juror – Thousands wrongfully dropped from KidCare: “As many as 27,000 kids may have been wrongfully dropped from the KidCare program, which offers low-cost insurance to Florida families.”

3. Pushing Rope – Why the Hispanic Vote Matters: “McCain publicly disown his own immigration reform bill. Hispanics are the largest growing voting group. It was a act of political stupidity and McCain was justly punished.”

4. The Campaign Manager – What Happened?: “There was an awful lot of ticket splitting in Florida, including a lot here in Pinellas County.”

5. Florida Citizens for Science – Math and science education getting attention: “This article in the Northwest Florida Daily News highlights a program to help schools teach math and science.”

6. Adam4PD- Well, I Lost: “After a year-long campaign, I am coming to terms with the fact that I will not serve as the Public Defender for the 12th Judicial Circuit. I congratulate Larry Eger on his victory and I wish him and the office well. I won’t lie, it was a very tough week, and perhaps I will write more about that in the future. At this point I want to thank everyone who played a role in my campaign.”

7. Son of Timatollah – Post-Election Blues: “But beyond the moment last Tuesday when the networks called it for Obama, I haven’t had much occasion to celebrate. There’s more to life than the Presidential election, and some of my time and treasure recently were put into the No on 2 campaign. I wish I had done more.”

8. Incertus (Brian) – It Won’t Be Easy: “But one of the nastiest messes the Bush administration will leave behind in terms of human rights will be the Guantanamo Bay prison. And if this piece is any indication, President Obama does not plan to take the easy out of the mess.”

9. Ybor City Stogie – Florida Where 62% Of The Voters Are Bigots: “I wish everyone well in Florida, but if I had my way, the tourist industry would take a huge dump. I am encouraging everyone I know not to visit ar vacation there.”

10. Pensito Review (Trish) – Florida Democratic Party Fails on State Level: “Florida Democrats have one foot in a blue state and the other foot firmly planted in a red one. Despite Sen. Barack Obama’s victory in Washington, Tallahasee looks about the same.”
