10 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a post with the top 10 blog posts that I think people should read from the previous day. Posts are included here and ranked based on a combination of originality, focus on Florida, length (longer, more thorough analysis is better), quality of writing and impact of the story.

1. (Brand new blogger) Crude, Lewd and Tatooed – You’re stupid and here’s why- Amendment 2: “Will somebody please explain to me why what people do in their house that they pay for, and pay their bills for, and put food in, while not bugging me at any point in history, why does this cause such an uproar in modern American life? Isn’t this the land of opportunity that people came to escape oppression?”

2. Dan Gelber – Celebrating mediocrity in Florida’s public schools: “I don’t relish being the guy that is constantly throwing cold water on the party, but the release of school grades this week came with the usual self-adulation from all the usual suspects, especially the Department of Education who announced that all is well in Florida’s school system because more schools are getting higher grades. People need to pause for a moment and remember just what the school grades reflect.”

3. Bark Bark Woof Woof – Annals in Irony: “If Mayor Naugle wants to know why gay people are unhappy, it’s because bigots like him are holding public office and using taxpayer dollars to marginalize them.”

4. Ranger Against War (Lisa) – Profligacy: Most of us do not live in the daily recognition of our good fortune. Our overly consumeristic natures are revealed in the Pixar animation ‘Wall-E,’ but the film is more than a diatribe. It shows what we have lost as we have gained, in a dark vision of a humanity hurtling towards — nothing.”

5. Florida Progressive Coalition (Jackie Dowd) – Action Alert: Help Increase the Child Tax Credit for 13 Million Kids: “Did you know that a parent working 30 hours a week for 50 weeks a year at $7.25 earns too little to qualify for the Child Tax Credit? Outraged? Click here to send a letter via email to your Members of Congress.”

6. The Spencerian – Please Help Re-Elect Rep. Keith Fitzgerald Today — GoFitzGo!: “You know that Representative Keith Fitzgerald is a candidate I’ve volunteered for in the past, and will volunteer for again in the future. He is one of the smart, pragmatic Democratic voices in the Florida legislature, and we need to do everything we can to help him.”

7. Tampa’s Back Door Ways – Ya broke it ya bought it: “Pretty much sums up George Bush AND Tampa …. in St Pete they’re talking of impeaching Tricky Ricky Baker and let’s hope in Tampa that talk of IMPEACHING PAM IORIO is not far behind.”

8. Pushing Rope – Florida Election News: “Wayne Garcia covered a Democratic debate between Kevin Beckner, Joe Redner and Denise Layne. The candidates are vying for the Hillsborough County Commission district 6 seat. The winner faces Republican incumbant Brian Blair.”

9. DAS Blog (alberich) – “Again I have been mistaken for a regressive sexist pig-troll on a feminist site simply because I dared question the Puritanism (which they would mis-understand and attribute to the right) of the place.”

10. Pushing Rope – Fun With Fox: “Fox News enjoys photoshopping journalists at The New York Times. Vanity Fair decided to have fun and photoshop the Fox News gang.”
