10 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a post with the top 10 blog posts that I think people should read from the previous day. Posts are included here and ranked based on a combination of originality, focus on Florida, length (longer, more thorough analysis is better), quality of writing and impact of the story.

1. Progress Florida (Damien Filer) – Who can you trust?: “So, what’s the deal? The deal is that these same corrupt corporate shills have mounted a years-long propaganda campaign to discredit the strongest voices from the scientific and academic communities by suppressing data and falsifying reports to keep the lemmings making payments on their Hummers. It’s the same with labor.”

2. Tampa Bay Blue – Florida College System: “Gov. Charlie Crist officially sanctioned a bold and controversial plan that will change higher education in Florida. At a ceremony Thursday, Crist signed a bill that establishes a new college system in Florida, where a population boom has outpaced the growth and funding of the university system. For supporters, the creation of the “Florida College System” is a reasonable step toward stimulating degree production at a lower cost to the state and would-be students.”

3. FLA Politics (chadmax) – The Progressive Case for Market-Priced Power: “Just putting it out there: foreign oil is the problem. Alternative energy is the solution.”

4. Incertus (Brian) – Activism in the Classroom: “Teaching what I do–literature and creative writing predominantly–it’s impossible to keep politics out of the discussion, especially when teaching contemporary work. Okay, it’s not impossible, but I think it would be intellectually dishonest, given the intersections between poetry and identity and political theory. One could conceivably teach a class on poetry without delving into social and political issues, but it would be an extremely limited class, I think.”

5. Pushing Rope – Where Is Charlie Crist?: “Charlie Crist bombed with the conservative establishment in Orange County, California. Florida’s absentee Governor spoke at the Flag Day Dinner. The OC Republican establishment was at the event.”

6. Pensito Review (Trish) – Florida Gov. Charlie Crist Steps Up Hetero Pretense: “Crist is widely believed to be gay and his new friend Carole Rome considered a beard to help him win the McCain vice presidential spot.”

7. Interstate4Jamming2 – Crist Will NOT Be Named McCain’s Number Two Choice: “You can put any amount of money on that, regardless of who is putting Florida’s governor on any kind of short list. When everything is said and done, the Arizona senator’s people will phone Charlie Crist with a nice thanks, but no thanks message. Why do I say that?…”

8. Avery Voice – Republican Energy Policies – from secret to bankrupt: “It was the current Petroleum Picked President who chose to lead with a “SECRET” energy policy. This SECRET ENERGY POLICY allowed no public input into the SECRET Meetings BIG Oil’s Vice President held, once they stole office.”

9. becoming change – ashamed & embarassed by john ausman: “i am ashamed to live in the county that has a state committeeman of the local democratic party as john ausman and i am embarrassed to be a part of a state party with jon ausman as a dnc member.”

10. South Florida Daily Blog – On Blogging Integrity: “babalu blog is never one to miss a chance to slam Democrats and Liberals whenever they can, even when it means sourcing al-Jazeera to do it.”
