  1. Welcome to Florida. I am a widow of a veteran who was 100% disabled, due to cancer from exposure to Agent Orange. I purchased a home here in Polk county. I filed for my property tax exemptions and one was for the Veterans exemption. After submitting all the paperwork etc, and also being given wrong information from some of the employees, I was denied the exemption. The reason being “my husband died in the state of Washington and was not a resident of Florida.” It doesn’t matter that he served his country and died because of that. Some unfair ruling that someone decided to add to eligibility for deductions overrules that important factor. I have two other homes in two different states, and neither one had any such stipulation. I now am no longer eligible for those exemptions as I reside here. I wonder how many other states have this same ruling in their qualifications for veteran exemptions.

Also Florida is a state for retirees. Many who come here and purchase a home are not Florida residents. Therefore, the widows of veterans who file for this exemption are not eligible if their husbands did not live here or die here but they still have to pay the taxes etc for living here. The main reason for the Veteran property tax exemption is to honor the veteran. And yet the one clause stating the residency factor overrules the main reason for a veteran receiving the deduction. I ask the people here in Florida is this fair and should this be changed. I think it is unfair and living on limited income any financial break for widows or seniors is imperative for their survival.
