3. Pensito Review – Miami Might Get Super-Secret Bill of Rights Tuesday: “I just found out from the Miami Herald that come Jan. 29, I will have the opportunity to vote for a ‘citizens’ bill of rights.’ Apparently, the thing will promote religious freedom, clean air and scenic beauty, as well as ban discrimination on the basis of domestic relationship status, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. ‘It would bring a modern approach to people’s rights in the city of Miami, including sexual preference and gender identification.’ — Marc Sarnoff. That’s pretty unusual in a city where one’s rights are only guaranteed to the extent that one aggressively exerts them. And I wasn’t the only one who didn’t know about it…”

5. Eye On Miami – Were the good times a mirage?: “‘Were the good times a mirage?’ is the front page, above the fold headline in today’s New York Times. The article summarizes the point of view we buff to a shine in our blog: that economic growth based on overdevelopment in Florida was grounded in greed and fraud stretching all the way from local zoning councils to the state legislature and Wall Street.”
6. Eye On Miami – Miami: burning down the house: “All layers of the housing market, not just poor people who own a home they cannot afford, are being swept up in the worst market since the Great Depression. Here is one, on a favorite historic street in Miami, Espanola Drive where smaller homes built in the 1920’s mix with larger, beautiful estates.”
7. Bloggy Bayou – Elections: “So I’ve been working at the early voting sites for the last few days and I’ve got a few observations. 1. A lot of Republicans, with absolutely no encouragement from me (as it is verboten) have commented on how they wish there was a ‘none of the above’ option in their Republican primary race. 2. There seems to be a fairly heavy turnout by Democrats, despite the fact that supposedly we won’t have a say at the convention. Our county is very heavily Republican weighted so when we see a lot of Dems it’s usually a surprise….”
8. Eye On Miami – Chaos at Miami Dade Elections: “And you thought they were busy with the Chads. I went to the elections department in Doral to vote. Wow! Are they busy. They have to validate thousands upon thousands of signatures for four citizen petitions: The cutoff date is February 1.”
9. Pushing Rope – Compassionate Conservatism: Hillsborough County Commission Edition: “Ronda Storms and Brian Blair convinced fellow Hillsborough County Commissioners to vote against funding for the Family Justice Center. The mission of the FJC is ‘to provide comprehensive services to Hillsborough County domestic violence victims and their families in a centralized location, or ‘one-stop-shop.” The FJC is now endanger of closing down.”
