Floridians Face Uphill Battle For Independence

Living in Florida? Then in addition to having a great time this Independence Day weekend, why not take a few focused minutes to recognize (and/or help others recognize) what’s happening to the state of Freedom in our state, starting today?

Because if the “Independence” aspect of this Fourth of July holiday is going to mean anything at all anymore, then a majority of Floridians are going to have to recognize the twisted irony of how this weekend arrived; ushered in with an outrageous bludgeoning of freedom-bashing legislation, courtesy of the Republican Party of Florida, all “Law of the Land” as of today, July 1st, 2011, the first day of the new fiscal year.

Listen, and you’ll hear the haunting sound of a bell ringing.

No, this sure as hell is not the Liberty Bell.

It’s the bell signaling the opening round in a long prizefight for the future of Freedom in Florida.

Start spreading the news that as of today, there are many repressive new laws officially “on the books” in this state of disrepair, laws that will interfere with or flat out obstruct what should be our (and/or your family member’s or friend’s) most basic rights as citizens: to vote; to health care; to reproductive choice & freedom; to a quality public school system; to an affordable college education; to employment and retirement security; to tax equality; to clean water & air; to growth management & environmental protections; to fair elections; and to a government that puts the public interest over corporate & special interests, the very ones (how about that?) that bought and paid for this diseased body of destructive legislation.

Tell all the people within earshot this weekend that those same interests also bought themselves a 2011 state budget with corporate tax cuts, in a time of economic crisis; plus gaping loopholes and shameless giveaways of our tax dollars, which Governor Scott and his allies in the legislature like to call Business “incentives”. And of course, they’ve used the same Big Lie to mislabel their weakening and/or repeal of regulations designed to discourage and punish Business misconduct.

So, it’s well worth our time to make a little time somewhere along the way this weekend for an informative, inspirational pep talk – with ourselves & our families, with our friends & neighbors. Let’s be frank about this fight being taken right to us by the Republican Party of Florida and their financiers. Right now, it’s pretty much of a one-way deal. A referee would already be close to calling this a technical knockout.

But I’m betting that Floridians are just getting started and have plenty of fight left in them. Sure, some are punch-drunk, as they call it in Boxing when you take too many blows and although still standing, are “out on your feet”. But we are indeed still standing. The trick now, the strategy, is to Stand Together – middle class & working poor families, beleaguered homeowners, the dispossessed & foreclosed upon, retirees, college students, public employees, union members & unions, children, veterans, the ill & disabled…

This Land Is Your Land; This Land Is My Land…This Land Was Made for You & Me

Not for corporate profiteers who seek to suck us all dry through radical, upside-down economic policies forced forward by their Republican Party of Florida pawns.

Not for Tea Party panderers and manipulators who seek to use our insecurities and differences to divide and conquer us.

What better way to come back from this Independence Day weekend, than ready to fight for our independence from all that crap and from all those assholes, ready to work together and reclaim our Florida government, By & For The People?

As you watch the colorful bombs bursting in air this weekend, do consider taking a minute here & there to talk with whomever you can about the battle ahead, and the need for strength, unity & resolve.

Remember: The fireworks, and the fight for Florida, have only just begun.

  1. The long slow arc of human liberty has set backs, and great leaps. Often when offense is heaped upon offense, so as to catch even the ear of the distracted, great things can happen.

The assault on SE Asia that necessitated the draft, within memory of activists yet on the front lines, awakened in some (if only in self-interest) if not in humane fellowship with the much put upon natives of southeast asia and activated Anti-War Millions across the globe.

The ruthless destruction of the shredded remnants of the middle class is so well coordinated and ubiquitous, so as to catch the eye of even the most casual observer. Again we have the coincidence of moral outrage and self interest. When a few years ago, a handful of economists wrote of the obvious injustice of republican voodoo economic policy and those interested in economic fairness raised the alarm, they found themselves greeted with the shrugs of those too mesmerized by their (temporary housing bubble) and the new slave-labor manufactured electronic toys to care. They shopped at Walmart and thought themselves fortunate.

Now the price of refusing to notice the invisible economic policy elephant for what it was and is, a force, empowered to drive Americans to a new feudalism, the working poor are becoming suddenly aware that they cannot live their lives untouched and apart from these KLEPTOCRATIC POLICIES.

The illusion that they can ignore these thieves is dissolving before their eyes. The illusion that they can participate by voting(via republican-manufactured and programmed) black box voting machines, has resulted again and again in a curious pattern of “heads they win, tails we lose elections”, resulting in UN-REPRESENTATION with the installation of radicals from the Corporate Party taking the reins of governance and steering policy toward an all-corporate all-the-time agenda.

We who strive to participate in policy have watched in horror as educational policy, investment policy and regulatory policy has turned onto a one way street of corporate give-away and away from serving any public interest.

Arguments among the politically savvy over how best to wake the slumbering majority, (who dream only of returning to the comfort of their easy chair, so they can watch American idol) only serves the KLEPTOCRATS. We activist few, must instead focus on informing all we can, of the precise damage being done, by the THIEVES occupying the PANTALOONS of Public Servants.

Dan’s point, that we should take every opportunity to inform and engage our victimized neighbors, is well put, but I would add, we have to be aware of Cassandra’s trap. Cassandra’s message was accurate and dead-on, but unheeded. We must understand, no one likes to be told, they’ve left the door open for the BAD-WOLF. The very significance of the danger makes it’s comprehension, that much more difficult.

Explaining to the average voter that there are thieves and worse, in the halls of power only reminds them of two unshakeable facts, their victimization, and the necessity of immediate action. These indisputable facts are as welcome as an eviction notice. We must offer a realistic alternative to inaction.

Anyone paying attention, has been made aware, that any hope of college for their children, will be increasingly difficult to obtain, even staying employed and in their homes has become less of a certainty. We must offer more than bad news, that much their eyes have already told them. Victimized women and children, waters polluted, credit unavailable, services unreliable, expenses rising daily. Anyone looking with open eyes sees a country in quite terrifying straits. No wonder, amusements, like VOICE and IDOL, are sought.

We must carry the message of hope through joint action. Survival and change through unity. We must be proponents of unity of action. And not just in words. We must find our common cause.
SOLIDARITY in Poland faced down the COMMUNIST TANKS and SECRET POLICE and the RUSSIANS EMPIRE, and WON. We may be facing similar dangers, but our overlords, must maintain the pretense of civil law.

We can overcome, although we may not have yet crossed our Edmund Pettus Bridge.
