The attached documents and letter below from Representative Rick Kriseman (D-St. Petersburg) were presented to House Speaker Dean Cannon today.
The information pertains to House Joint Resolution 785 and House Bill 787 concerning recall of state legislators and statewide officeholders.
Democratic Office, Florida House of Representatives
Dear Speaker Cannon
In an effort to empower our constituents and increase our accountability to them, I filed two bills this session related to the recall of state legislators and statewide officeholders. HJR 785 and HB 787 were common sense measures that brought consistency to Florida’s recall laws. As you may know, we’ve provided for the recall of municipal officials, but not for ourselves.
While it’s disappointing to see these proposals ignored, the enthusiasm for them from people outside the capitol has made their filing worthwhile. In fact, an informal online petition in support of these bills has garnered more than 25,000 signatures in just the past month.
The conclusion of session may signal the end of this legislation and make support for it moot, but it should not – and will not – signal the end of Floridians demanding a better government.
It is my sincere hope that this legislature, led by the House, will one day consider real reform measures, including the ability to recall.
Please take a moment to review the file I sent you and read some of the comments. I’m confident you will be impressed with the level of concern expressed by our constituents.
Thank you for your time and for your leadership in our chamber this session.
Rep. Rick Kriseman
