26 Stories to Read

This is our regular feature where every day I do a quick post with the top posts/stories that I think people should read from the previous day.

1. Broward’s Blog – Linda McDonalds’s Opponent A Big Hypocrite: “Matt Hudson, Linda McDonald’s opponent in the HD 101 race. Is a hypocrite, he had a DUI and accident in 1998, but attacked his primary opponent Zichella for attempting to buy alcohol when he was underage.” Don’t forget to vote Tuesday.

2. FLA Politics – FL-25: Enough of Mario Already, Ask Joe to Get In: “Over the weekend, people have been talking, activists have been working, momentum has been building, and now it’s time to act.” and Miami-Dade Dems – Door’s still open for Draft Joe Garcia – Raul Martinez, too: “For those not on the email list of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Party, here’s what Joe Garcia said in response to the rush of interest in drafting him for Congress: ‘While I am still far from making a decision, I do want to say that your kindness and support are very humbling and much appreciated!’” and Swing State Project – FL-25: A Foe for Mario?: “I have yet to hear a rumored candidate to take on Ros-Lehtinen, but there is one name floating around to take on Mario Diaz-Balart: Joe García, former executive director of the Cuban American National Foundation and current Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair.” (You can give $5 to help Draft Joe).

3. FLA Politics – On FlaDems, Labor and Dwarf Tossing: “Today we read that, in the past 3 years labor unions ‘have steered $929,873 to state Democrats during that span, making them among the biggest contributors to either side, state records show.’ Here’s the question: in the event the FlaDems return to power (and they will at some point), will they revert to their history of hosing the labor movement?”

4. Pushing Rope – Nonprofit Causes of the Day: “Jobsite Theater — I have been trying to organize a Jobsite Theater fundraiser. Until that happens I’m asking you to help the Tampa theatre company with a donation. The company was big winner at the Creative Loafing Best of the Bay awards. Help them continue providing Tampa with great theatre. “The Pretty Bird Woman House – Far too many women have experienced domestic violence, homelessness and sexual abuse. The Pretty Bird Woman House in South Dakota provides aid to women in need. These are the services PBWH has provided within a year’s time.”

5. Florida Netroots – Thanksgiving: “Let’s set politics aside for a moment. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the things you are grateful for in your life and to help those less fortunate. Florida’s food banks are struggling and you can help with much needed supplies.”

6. Blog For America – The Untold Story Of How Coal-Happy Florida Shelved Another Tower Of Soot by Corbett Kroehler: “It should come as no surprise to you that the Sierra Club opposed Southern Company’s plan to add a coal gasification (so-called “clean coal”) plant at the Orlando Utilities Commission Stanford facility south of the University of Central Florida main campus. However, you may enjoy knowing the context of how this planned expansion came and went.”

7. Blurbex – No Need to Arrest the Homeless; Just Drown Them: “In my travels last night, I happened to pass by St. Petersburg’s City Hall while visiting some friends in the downtown area. What I saw boiled my blood. For the last few months several homeless people have taken to camping out on the sidewalk in front of the building. It’s not a protest; there are simply few places to sleep these days where business owners won’t complain. Last night, I noticed there were considerably less people on the sidewalk than normal. I immediately saw why: the sprinklers were on and drenching the sidewalks on both sides of City Hall.”

8. Florida Netroots – Legislative Update: “Here’s a few issues to think about before the legislative session convenes….”

9. Pushing Rope – Why Can’t Florida Run Elections?: “The Tallahassee Democrat reports over 43,000 Florida voter registration forms were rejected since 2006.”

10. Pushing Rope – More City of Tampa Layoffs: “Another great example of how trickle down economics does not create new jobs.”

11. Bark Bark Woof Woof – Florida Parent Sued For Blogging About School: “A school in Orlando is suing a parent for writing nasty things about it on her blog.”

12. Flablog – Conspicuous consuption: “I just got around to Saturday’s Wall St Journal about water-guzzler mansions in Palm Beach. It seems a few big estates pay their way past water restrictions or find loopholes. One mansion uses the same amount of water as 380 average homes.”

13. Miami-Dade Dems – Members of Congress we like: “Doing a little housekeeping on the links in the right-hand column, I decided to add web sites for our Democrats in Congress, Kendrick Meek, FL-17, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, FL-20.”

14. Pam’s House Blend – Florida: talking cam proposed to deter beach sex: “First we have Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle’s proposal to put a portable ‘robo-potty’ in beach restrooms to deter specifically man-on-man sex. Now we have a new device being debated over in Martin County — a talking camera that announces it will start rolling if people (of any orientation) on the beaches there don’t stop boinking.”

15. South of the Suwannee – The Women are Coming, The Women are Coming! Everyone to get from street!: “James Wolcott points us to a post on a conservative website that uses a snippet from the TV comedy Scrubs to make the larger point that men are being humiliated and made subservient to women. It’s the usual women as controlling bitches argument that is common on the right-hand side of the political spectrum, but found in more upscale environs as well. The comments following the post are full of misogyny and finger-pointing.”

16. Broward’s Blog – Cities With Jan 29th Elections: “The following are Broward County cities with elected seats up for the Jan. 29 primary election.”

17. Florida Citizens for Science – Latest news story: “TV station Bay News 9 ran a piece on the state science standards, choosing to make the story a dueling quotes war between FCS member Johnathan Smith and Polk County school board member Kay Fields.”

18. Pushing Rope – Allstate vs the State of Florida: “This is a fascinating exchange between Deputy Insurance Commissioner Belinda Miller and Allstate Floridian Vice-President Bonnie Gill. The dialogue is about how ALLstate sets it’s rates.”

19. Broward’s Blog – Parrish Slams Skidmore: “State Rep. Kelly Skidmore, a Democrat who represents part of northern Broward, delivered a withering attack Thursday on the way the Legislature handled the property tax issue. Among her criticisms: The portability provision, which allows homeowners to transfer some of their accumulated Save Our Homes tax savings to new homes isn’t going to cure the state’s real estate woes. As Skidmore finished her comments at the Democratic Professionals Forum, a political club that meets in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a hand shot up. It was Broward Property Appraiser Lori Parrish.”

20. Pushing Rope – Seven Single Member Districts For Hillsborough County: “Citizens for Equal County Representation have launched a petition to have seven regional districts for Hillsborough County. The Commisioner currently has four regional regional districts and three county-wide districts. CECR needs 37,202 signitures on the petition to make the ballot. The organization also needs volunteers.”

21. Pushing Rope – Kevin White Sexual Harassment Scandal: “Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin White has been accused of sexual harassment by recently fired staffer Alyssa L. Ogden.”

22. ricksblog.biz – Time for White to grow up: “Escambia County Commissioner Kevin White showed his lack of maturity once again over the Pensacola Children’s Chorus’s request for a reduction in rent for its performances at the Pensacola Civic Center. White is still upset that the citizens would question his stewardship of county monies and hire Taxwatch to review county spending.”

23. Bob Allen Round-up: Pushing Rope – Bob Allen Resigns, Smashed Frog – Classic Bob Allen Double Talk, Talk To Me – Despot, Talk To Me – Somewhere Over the Men’s Room, Pam’s House Blend – Bob ‘BJ’ Allen convicted, resigns, The Spencerian – Allen Out: Feb. 15 and Grassroots Brevard – Bob Allen Resigns.

Mayor Giuliani is the most famous of the hopefuls, largely because of his role as mayor of New York City during the September 11 attacks. His fame helps him do well in early national polls, but Republicans have serious doubts about him. His more liberal positions on abortion and gun control make him less popular among social conservatives. Most Republicans would be willing to overlook their ideological differences if they believed that Rudy was the only candidate who could keep Hillary out of the White House, but his personal life causes concern about his electability. In 2002, Giuliani recommended his friend Bernard Kerik to be Secretary of Homeland Security, at which point multiple scandals derailed the nomination, with Kerik pleading guilty to corruption charges. Rudy has been married three times and divorced twice. His second divorce was particularly nasty as his wife learned that he intended to separate from her at a public press conference. His own daughter doesn’t use her father’s name and doesn’t support his candidacy. Rudy also can behave oddly, sometimes taking cell phone calls while delivering a speech. Most disturbing of all, Rudy seems to know little of the world outside of New York City. Still, he’s ahead in the national polls and remains the man to beat for the nomination. So what are the Giuliani doubters to do?

    Off-topic corporate spammers for Mitt!

As if I needed another reason to dislike his campaign.
